Why Evolution Legal was Founded

Evolution Legal was created to provide a modern and client-focused way of resolving workplace disputes. The firm is built on transparency, clarity, and practical advocacy that helps employees move forward with confidence during some of the most stressful moments in their careers.

Many employees who seek legal help are already facing uncertainty. Evolution Legal exists to provide clarity during that uncertainty, with a process that protects rights and offers a clear path forward.

After many years representing employees in Alberta, Stephen saw that a large portion of people facing termination or workplace issues were also overwhelmed by the unpredictability of traditional legal services. Billing was unclear, communication was inconsistent, and clients often felt unsure of their next step.

Stephen Dugandzic is the founding and managing lawyer of Evolution Legal. With more than 10 years of experience in employment law, civil litigation and human rights, he has helped over 1,000 Calgary employees protect their workplace rights and achieve fair resolutions.

By focusing exclusively on employee-side representation and a flat-fee structure, Evolution Legal gives clients clarity in both strategy and cost from the outset. This reflects a belief that effective advocacy should be practical, accessible, and focused on real-world outcomes.

Stephen Dugandzic is the founding and managing lawyer of Evolution Legal. Called to the Alberta Bar in 2014, Stephen brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to his practice.

His competence in employment law, combined with his compassionate approach, ensures his clients receive the utmost support throughout their legal journeys. Stephen has helped over 1,000 Calgary employees protect their workplace rights and achieve fair resolutions.

Earlier in his career, Stephen founded and led YYC Employment Law Group, one of Calgary’s fastest-growing employment law boutiques, which he later sold in 2025. This experience helped shape his commitment to a modern, client-focused approach to employment law, which today defines Evolution Legal.

Stephen began his legal career with two of Canada’s most respected national law firms, Stikeman Elliott LLP and Bennett Jones LLP. He later served as in-house counsel for a major national energy-services company before helping expand the employment law practice at Taylor Janis LLP as a senior associate in its Calgary office.

A born and raised Calgarian, Stephen completed his Honours BA in Communications and Business at the University of Ottawa, graduating magna cum laude, before earning his Juris Doctor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. Throughout his academic studies he received multiple awards and distinctions.

Stephen is widely regarded for his negotiation skill, composure under pressure, and practical guidance grounded in both advocacy and common sense. Clients appreciate Stephen for his friendly demeanour and ability to communicate complex employment issues in easy to understand language.

Outside of his legal practice, Stephen enjoys spending time with his family, camping in the mountains, hiking, long dog walks, and being outdoors.

Stephen is also frequently consulted by the media on employment law issues affecting Calgary employees and is recognized for his ability to explain complex legal concepts in a clear and approachable way.
